PTA Alert: Never Share SMS Verification Codes
Date: July 26, 2025
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a cybersecurity warning urging the public to avoid sharing any SMS or messaging app verification codes with unknown parties. This measure is critical to preventing identity theft, financial loss, and unauthorized access to online accounts.
Why Verification Codes Are Targeted
Verification codes—often used as One-Time Passwords (OTPs)—are meant to confirm your identity for banking, shopping, or accessing digital accounts. If shared with scammers, they can be used to:
- Transfer funds without your permission
- Reset account passwords
- Access private chats and documents
- Steal your identity for fraudulent activities
How These Scams Happen
Cybercriminals impersonate banks, mobile companies, or even friends, requesting verification codes urgently. This tactic pressures users into acting without thinking, making them more vulnerable to fraud.
PTA’s Official Statement
PTA has clarified that no legitimate company, including telecom operators and government departments, will ever ask you to share your verification code or OTP. Users should immediately report any such attempts to their service provider or the PTA.
How to Stay Safe
- Never share OTPs, PINs, or verification codes
- Avoid clicking on suspicious links in messages or emails
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on important accounts
- Install only trusted apps from verified sources
- Keep software and mobile apps updated for better security

Final Words
In today’s digital world, your verification code is as valuable as your password. By keeping it private, you protect your digital identity and financial assets. PTA urges every citizen to be aware, act responsibly, and help spread this crucial awareness to others.
