Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Unveils Ambitious Higher Education Reforms

July 25, 2025 – Lahore

Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a bold and far-reaching set of reforms aimed at reshaping the higher education landscape across the province. Chairing a high-level meeting in Lahore, the CM emphasized quality, innovation, and global collaboration as the cornerstones of this new educational vision.

Major Universities to Lead the Way

In a landmark decision, three institutions—Government College (GC) University, Government College for Women University, and the University of Engineering and Technology (UET)—have been selected as model universities. These institutions will receive priority support in faculty development, research funding, international linkages, and infrastructure upgrades to set a new standard for academic excellence.

Global Collaboration on the Horizon

Punjab’s growing reputation as an educational hub has attracted interest from prestigious international institutions. Notably, the University of London and Brunel University (UK) are in discussions to establish satellite campuses in the province. This will offer local students access to world-class education without the need to travel abroad.

Accountability Through KPIs and College Councils

To ensure better governance and measurable results, College Management Councils will be formed across institutions. These councils will implement a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) system, holding colleges and universities accountable while encouraging continuous improvement.

Education Vigilance Squad for Surprise Inspections

A newly formed Education Vigilance Squad will be responsible for unannounced inspections across public and private institutions. The goal: to maintain high academic standards and eliminate administrative irregularities.

Empowering Youth: Scholarships and Laptops

The government’s commitment to youth development continues through the CM Punjab Talent Scholarship and Laptop Scheme. Already, over 19,000 students have applied. These initiatives aim to equip students with the tools they need to thrive in today’s knowledge-driven economy.

Strategic Vision: Higher Education Plan 2025–2029

The newly launched Higher Education Strategic Plan (2025–2029) focuses on:

  • Quality teaching and faculty development
  • Promoting advanced research
  • Driving digital transformation in education
  • Strengthening global academic partnerships

This roadmap sets the stage for Punjab to lead in educational innovation and global competitiveness.

Punjab’s First Higher Education Conference

In another first, the Chief Minister has approved Punjab’s inaugural Higher Education Conference. The event will bring together national and international academics, education experts, and policymakers to shape the future of learning in the region.

Looking Ahead

These transformative reforms reflect the Punjab government’s strong commitment to making education more accessible, accountable, and globally competitive. With clear strategies and ambitious goals, Punjab is set to emerge as a regional leader in higher education.
